Q: What are the common reasons why Nigerian students intending to study in Canada are refused a Canadian study permit?
A: There are many reasons why a Nigerian student wanting to study in Canada may be refused a Canadian study permit. Based on our extensive years of handling Canadian study visa applications, we can say that below are the common reasons why Nigerians who intend to study in Canada have their visas refused:
• Intended program/course of study in Canada is not related to the student’s previous education and/or employment history.
• Insufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses.
• Lack of ties (e.g. family ties, social ties, economic ties, etc.) to your home country (i.e. Nigeria).
• Length of study in Canada (i.e. the duration of the course/program in Canada, is too short).
• Financial documents (i.e. bank statement) of student and/or sponsor shows inconsistent balances and recent lump sum deposits.
• Misrepresentation (Document Fraud). Misrepresentation diminishes the overall credibility of the visa application submitted, and thus results in a visa refusal. Examples of misrepresentations would be:
• Not declaring that you have been refused a visa for another country.
• False or altered documents, such as: bank statement, marriage certificate, visas, birth certificate, etc.

Q: How much do I (or my sponsor) need to show in my bank account, in order to apply for my Canadian study permit?
A: You must prove that you have sufficient funds to support yourself and any accompanying family member, while you are in Canada for Study. The minimum amount that you will need is as follows:
SINGLE STUDENT: Tuition fee for one year + $10,000 for a 12-month period (or $833 per month).
+ ONE FAMILY MEMBER: Additional $4,000 for a 12-month period (or $333 per month).
+ EACH ADDITIONAL FAMILY MEMBER: Another additional $3,000 for a 12-month period per dependent child of any age (or $255 per month).

Q: In applying for my Canada study permit/visa, I want to use a sponsor who is not related to me. Will this reduce my chances of securing a Canada student visa?
A: The best option is having a sponsor who is your family member (e.g. father, mother, brother, sister, uncle, etc.). However, if you decide to use a sponsor who is not your family member, the letter of financial support that your sponsor will provide to you, has to include a rational explanation as to why this person is financing your studies.

Q: Why should I pay my tuition fees to the Canadian educational institution, before I apply for my Canadian student visa (study permit)?
A: It should be noted that payment of tuition fees is not a prerequisite for visa approval. However, from our years of experience assisting students with visa application to Canada, we have discovered that when students pay their tuition fees before they apply for their study permit, it significantly increases their chance of receiving a visa. We believe that when you pay your tuition fees upfront, you are convincing the visa officer that your primary reason to come to Canada is for education. So, we recommend that you pay a portion of your tuition fees (ideally at least for your first semester), or full tuition fees (if you can afford it), before you apply for your student visa.
And don’t worry, your tuition fees are safe and secure with the Canadian educational institution. In a case where your visa is refused by the Canadian High Commission, the Canadian school will refund your tuition fees.
So ask yourself, do you want to increase your chance of receiving a visa? If yes, then pay your tuition fees.
Q: I applied for a Canadian study permit/visa by myself (or using a different agent) and my application was refused. What should I do next?
A: If your Canadian study permit/visa application was refused, we do not advise that you re-apply ‘blindly’. We recommend that the next action you should take is to request for your visa file (i.e. Access to Information & Personal Information Request) from Immigration, Refugees & Citizenship Canada - IRCC (formerly: Citizenship & Immigration Canada - CIC). This is important because you cannot rely solely on the grounds (i.e. reasons) that were checked off in the visa refusal letter that was given to you by IRCC.
Keep in mind that only an authorized individual can make a request for Access to Information from IRCC. So that means, a visa applicant whose application was refused, will likely not be able to request for their visa file on their own. Q: Why should I request for my visa file (i.e. Access to Information) from Citizenship & Immigration Canada – CIC (now: Immigration, Refugees & Citizenship Canada – IRCC), when I am refused a visa?
A: It is essential that you request for your visa file (i.e. Access to Information & Personal Information Request) from IRCC after a visa refusal because this gives you a better perspective why your visa was refused. The visa refusal letter that you were given by IRCC, is a general letter that they provide to all visa applicants whose visa was refused, and this letter has a limited number of checkboxes that the visa officer can choose from. So, the Canadian visa officer will usually choose the option(s) that closely aligns to the reason why your visa was refused, but this may not be the specific reason why your visa was refused.
However, if you request for your visa file, the exact and detailed reason(s) why your visa was refused will be contained in the visa officer’s notes of your visa file. So, once you are aware of the particular reason(s) why your visa was refused, you will then be in a better position to act accordingly.
Please note that only a Canadian Citizen or a Canadian Landed Immigrant (Canadian Permanent Resident) or a Canadian visa applicant that is resident in Canada, can request for a visa file from IRCC. So, if you are based in Nigeria and your study visa application have been refused, that means that you cannot request for your visa file on your own; because you are not authorized to. Hello, I had my masters in the uk from 2009-2011 in Manufacturing systems and management. Since i returned to my country i have been working as a Quality assurance/Quality Control Engineer. In general, there should be some form of progression in education, otherwise you should be prepared to provide a rational explanation. So, since you already have a masters degree, the ideal step will be for you to pursue a doctoral program (PhD) program, instead of another masters program. For visa purpose, stating that you find the course interesting as your explanation for wanting to have another masters, does not seem convincing… The Canadian visa officers will believe that you are only using studying, as a means to immigrate to Canada. So, if you intend to go this route, you should be prepared to write a strong statement of purpose that you will include in your visa application.
On the other hand, the decision whether a student should include their family in their initial study permit application, or have their family join them at a later date, is usually analyzed holistically based on your visa application package. Since you graduated with a 2:1, you should have applied to pursue a masters program in Canada, instead of a PGD. Also, the course that you intended to study in Canada (i.e. Project management), is not related to your previous education (i.e. Engineering).
Sure, you can reapply as a masters student for next admission. But we recommend that before you submit a new application for a Canadian study permit, you should ask an authorized person to request for your Canadian visa case file (GCMS notes) for your previous application. Canada application for visitor visa (temporary resident visa) background information Question 2b is “Have you ever been refused a visa or permit, denied entry or ordered to leave Canada or any other country?”. So that means that you answered “No” to that question, when you should have answered “Yes”. Keep in mind that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) shares information with some other countries (e.g. the USA). So, if for example, you have been denied an American visa in the past and you answered “No” to that question, the Canadian visa officer will find out.
By answering “No” to that question, when in fact it should have been “Yes”, it diminished the overall credibility of your visa application, resulting in a visa refusal. They believe that if you were not truthful in answering that question, then they wonder what else you may have lied about on your application.

Keep in mind that since you already have a masters degree and you intend to pursue another masters program in Canada, the onus is on you to prove to the Canadian visa officer that you are a genuine student. Because in general, there should be a progression in education. i.e. someone who has a masters degree, should idealy be going for a PhD and not another masters. Therefore, if you are applying for your Canadian study permit on your own, make sure that you include a strong statement of purpose, providing a rational reason why despite the fact you already have a masters degree, you now want to go for another masters degree.
On the other hand, regarding your chances of securing a Canadian study permit, there are so many factors that the Canadian visa officers take into consideration apart from finances. Being asked to proceed with medicals, shows that there is progress in the visa application. In the past, being instructed to proceed with medicals was a positive sign that the visa will be approved, except the applicant has a medical condition that makes the person inadmissible to Canada. However, in recent times, there have been situations where a student was instructed to proceed with medicals, and the student visa was later denied for other reasons that is not medical related. Therefore, your friend should just keep his/her fingers crossed, because the visa decision could still go either way, regardless of the fact that he/she have been asked to proceed with medical… Especially looking at the timeline that you provided.

As per IRCC (formerly: CIC), you/your sponsor must prove that you have sufficient funds to support yourself, while you are in Canada for your studies. For a single student, the financial document (e.g. bank statement) that you provide, must have a minimum of your tuition fee for one year + $10,000 CAD. Also, since someone else will be sponsoring you, he/she must have much more than the minimum amount required, because it does not make sense that someone will give you all their money for you to embark on your studies in Canada.

Have been refused visa for study permit in canada embassy accra, for the following reason: purpose of visit, no assurance that i will come back home after the program, financial status/asset, and Misrepresentation. I have travel history. i want to know if i still have chance to appeal from nigeria and chances of securing study permit visa. I used an agent called Genuine Visa Consult (GVC) and I got an email from VO asking if I used a representative and I answer “No” on my Study permit Questionnaire they gave me 15 days to respond which I got back to GVC which they asked me to deny and tell them I am been sponsor by my company. The visa was refuse and It says “you are welcome to reapply if you feel that you can respond to these concerns and can demonstrate that you meet the requirement”. Thank God i was not banned but i am still scared. i will be waiting for your feedback asap.

From the information that you have provided, the primary reason why your Canadian study permit application was refused is due to misrepresentation. A visa refusal for “misrepresentation” will have significant impact on all your future interactions with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), as it is considered to be fraud. Misrepresented information can be provided (or omitted) by yourself, a family member, or your agent. In all cases, it is the principal applicant (i.e. you) who is at fault – even if the principal applicant did not know the misrepresentation occurred.
THE WAY FORWARD: Do not re-apply blindly, you should ask an authorized person to request for your Canadian visa file, so that you can see the visa officer’s note on your case file. For example, the Canadian visa officer may have given you a permanent record of fraud with them, so if you reapply in this situation, your new application is likely to be refused again.

If it is an Express Entry application that you are submitting online, then you may need the personal reference number. You can easily get a new one by completing a new eligibility questionnaire.
On the other hand, for other applications, it will not be necessary since you have gotten to the stage of document uploads.
I had my B.Sc and MSc in Mechanical Engineering and I work with a multinational coy. But I intend to diversify into business because I believe that working for an organisation can’t make me what I to be in life. So ,I applied for a diploma in business administration in one of the colleges in Alberta and my admission has been issued to me. Hello Segun, the fact that you already have other educational qualifications that is higher than your intended program of study in Canada, is not in your favour. The Canadian visa officers may deem that you are not a legitimate student and only using “studying” as a way to get into Canada. So, the onus is on you to convince the visa officer that you are a genuine student. One of the way that you can do this is to include a letter of intent (also called a statement of purpose), explaining why you have decided to pursue a business administration program. Also, the chances of your visa approval will be higher if the admission you got is for a post-graduate diploma (PGD) program and not an undergraduate level diploma program.

I studied computer science, took project management courses during my undergraduate days and now work as a project/operational manager at a multipurpose financial cooperative company. i gained acceptance into lambton college for pgd in enterprise project management {project management} . i have been given a sponsorship of 2700CAD by the company, with a written sponsorship letter to back that up, i also possess a duly signed leave of studies letter, and the companies statement of account with constant flow of nothing less than XXm every month.

In terms of finances, you must prove that you have sufficient funds to support yourself and your wife, while you are in Canada for your studies. Your closing bank balance must have a minimum of: Your tuition fee for one year + Additional $10,000 CAD to cover your living expenses + Another additional $4,000 CAD to cover your wife’s living expenses in Canada. As you did not state how much your tuition fee for one year is, I cannot say whether your N7 million closing balance is sufficient or not.
On the other hand, since you included your wife in your Canada visa application, that means that you lack family ties to your home country that may bring you back to Nigeria after your studies in Canada. This may reduce the success chances of your study permit application, as the Canadian visa officer may feel that you are using “studying” as a means to immigrate to Canada. Good luck!

From our experience, we have discovered that there is a higher visa success rate for student’s who intend to pursue a masters degree in Canada, compared to student’s intending to pursue a post graduate diploma (PGD) or certificate in Canada. However, there is NOT a ‘blanket’ denial for PGD students.
In this situation, when you are applying for a Canadian study permit you have to be able to prove to the Canadian visa officer that you are a genuine student. For example, it is not realistic for a 1st class or a second class upper (2:1) graduate to decide to pursue a PGD program in Canada, except a rational explanation is included by the visa applicant in the visa application package. But, if a second class lower (2:2), a third class, or an Higher National Diploma (HND) student decides to pursue a PGD, then it is understandable.

Hello Kayode. To study a Masters program at Vancouver Island University (VIU) Canada, the last two years of your undergraduate study must be equivalent to a second class upper (2:1). So, since your last 2 years GPA does not meet up with that, you will have to consider first going for VIU’s Post Degree Diploma in Business (PDDB) program. The PDDB program at VIU is a one year program, and if you have good grades in the PDDB program (usually a minimum of B average), you will be offered a spot in VIU’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) / Master of Science in International Management (MScIM) program afterwards.

OPTION 1: Re-apply, but ensure that you address the visa officers concerns. In order to increase the chances that your new visa application will be approved, you should ask an authorized person to request for your Canadian visa file. OPTION 2: Proceed with a judicial review. This is usually a long process and only a licensed Canadian lawyer can get this done for you. Hello Edison. In terms of finances, the Canadian visa officer’s look at both the bank account trend and the closing balance. So, if there is sufficient closing balance, but the bank account history is not consistent with the closing balance, the visa may be denied for a reason similar to this “bank statements show recent and large deposits that do not demonstrate stable, readily available financial resources”. But if it is consistent, then you are okay in terms of finances. But, keep in mind that IRCC (formerly: CIC) verifies financial information, so your father will have to ensure that he maintains sufficient account balances (i.e. money) during the period that your visa application is being processed by IRCC.
Also note that a Canadian study permit application may be refused for other reasons apart from finances. Yes, your uncle can financially support you for your studies in Canada. And, an affidavit will suffice as proof of relationship. We (i.e. Plumville) mostly deal with Nigerian student’s, so we cannot confirm what pertains to Bangladesh/Kuwait. Hence, we recommend that you contact the Canadian educational institution that you intend applying to, to find out from them. For example, if you were a Nigerian, most (& not all) Canadian educational institution will waive the requirement for English test results (i.e. IELTS/TOEFL), as long as the Nigerian student had a minimum of C6 in English in their WAEC/NECO examinations (i.e. high school / secondary school). Ma’am I guess only an affidevit won’t satisfy them right. They will also ask for my uncle’s national Id or bio data page of passport. They will also as for the documents to prove such as my uncle’s birth certificates and my mom’s birth certificate that they both have same parents and even my mom’s marriage certificate. And they will also ask for written explaination for each and everything such as I have to convince that after I graduate I will be returning to my home country as an evidence of property papers, birth certificates and my parents investments like fixed deposit s etc.

An affidavit (with your uncle’s passport photograph affixed to it), along with your uncle’s valid ID (e.g. voter card, national ID, bio data page of international passport, etc.) will suffice. For visa purpose, more is always better. But, if you do not provide your uncle’s and mom’s birth certificate, that shouldn’t be an issue. Sure, a major aspect that the Canadian visa officer considers when reviewing a visa application is the applicant’s ties to the home country. Ties – such as a job, home, financial assets or family – helps to convince the Canadian visa officer that you may return back to your home country, after your studies in Canada. Dear William. Securing an admission into a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma (PGD) program in Canada, will be the easy part. However for visa purpose, since you already have a masters degree, in order to increase the chances that your Canadian study permit application will be approved, your best bet will be to pursue a PhD in Canada. On the other hand, if you decide to pursue a PGD in Canada, your visa may be refused, because it is not realistic that someone who already has a masters degree, will now want to go for a PGD. Except of course you can provide a convincing reason in your visa application, why you have decided to do this. Otherwise, the Canadian visa officer may believe that you are only using ‘studying’ as a means just to get into Canada, and deem that you are not a genuine student, hence a visa denial.

Each university in Canada has its own policy regarding admission requirements and the admission requirements will usually be available on the educational institution’s website. However, as a general rule, a Nigerian student wanting to pursue a Masters program in Canada, is expected to have graduated from their undergraduate studies with a Second Class Upper (2:1) or higher. But, if the student graduated with a Second Class Lower (2:2) from their undergraduate study, it is important you know that most Canadian educational institution will only consider a 2:2 for their masters program, if your GPA in the last two years of your undergraduate studies is above 3.00 on a 4.00 scale (i.e. 3.50 on a 5.00 scale). Keep in mind that meeting the minimum admission requirement that is required by a Canadian institution does not guarantee you admission.

But, keep in mind that in your case, securing an admission will be the easy part, the major huddle will be whether your Canadian study permit/visa application will be approved or refused. Usually when someone already has a degree, the ideal situation is for the person to pursue a level of study that is higher than their previous degree. So, since you already have a BSc degree and you now want to pursue an undergraduate level diploma, the onus will be on you to prove to the Canadian visa officer that you are a genuine student.

Dear Oni. You can apply to an undergraduate program in Canada with your WAEC/NECO result and your National Diploma (ND) in the Nigerian polytechnic. Then, when you secure an admission, you will need to provide the course outlines for the courses that you did during your ND, in order for the Canadian school to consider whether those courses that you studied during your ND will be waived for you or not. If some courses are waived for you, that will mean that you will be able to obtain an undergraduate degree in Canada at a shorter time compared to if no course is waived for you. Hello Amina. Your question is not quite clear, but we will provide a response based on our understanding of your question. First of all, what do you mean by incomplete WAEC result? As a general rule, a Nigerian student wanting to pursue an undergraduate degree in Canada, is expected to have a WAEC or NECO result with at least five/six credits (depending on the Canadian school) including English and Mathematics. Keep in mind that to pursue postgraduate studies in Canada, you need to have had an undergraduate degree (e.g. a bachelors or HND degree).
